73% of gamer parents allow their children to play video games
BackGame publisher and developer Astrum Entertainment conducted a research among the audience of gamers who have children. Almost 6,000 people took part in the survey. The results show that a third of parents play video games with their children, and the vast majority allow their kids to play independently. More than half of the respondents consider games good for their children and would be supportive of their decision to pursue a career in the gaming industry.
About 32% of players have preschool-aged children, and 57% have schoolchildren. When asked how they spend their leisure time with their kids, 54% answered that they go for walks, 39% watch cartoons, movies, and TV shows, and 33% play video games with their children. Visiting malls, playing sports and board games, and reading were also named among popular leisure activities.
73% of parents allow their children to play video games. At the same time, 23% do not limit their children’s screen time, 38% allow them to play after school and compulsory activities, and 12% believe children should only play during school breaks.
Astrum Ent also decided to find out whether parents believe that video games can be useful — and 52% of the respondents agreed with that statement. Another 23% have never thought about this question. Among the potential benefits, parents named developing reaction speed and decision making (33%), as well as strategic thinking (31%), training perseverance and strong will (22%), exploring new technologies (21%), socializing and sharing emotions (16% each), getting help for studying (8%). Parents also mentioned developing fantasy, exploring special features and mentality of other cultures, times, and realities, developing and consolidating crucial value concepts, developing empathy, and much more.
At the same time, 59% of parents say that they would not be against it if their child worked in the gaming industry and became a game designer or programmer (23% each), an artist (16%), and a project lead (13%). Also, the respondents would be happy if their child became a tester, a screenwriter or an esports athlete.
